Shadows and Life

'Shadows and Life 2010 600x800 mm

Following on from my first work after the fire, 'Rejuvenation', I decided to do a series of works inspired by images I've experienced in the aftermath of Black Saturday. 'Shadows and Life' is the next in the series and is inspired by the amazing regrowth of the Xanthorrhea's in the valleys of the Kinglake ranges. It was fascinating the way that the first half of the growth was singed while the second half was a fantastically vibrant green. The main tree is based on a tree in my driveway where the fire was so hot it burnt the ground away from the charred roots. The background is based on one of the many devastated pine plantations found around the area.
